Ohio State’s learning communities give students a place to make friends and explore different learning activities; including, attending local field trips, making relationships with staff and professionals and participate in research and internship opportunities. The Women in Engineering learning community will help me enhance a small community within a large university. Engineering, a field that is 81.6% male, is a vital and important field in our society that has a lack of the female voice; making it imperative for women to find a place to conjure their ideas. The Women in Engineering community will provide me with an early arrival time that will help with the transition into college, the ability to interact with faculty and professionals to help build my professional resume and the chance to interact and engage with women who are going through the same thing as I am. An Ohio State learning community, specifically the Women in Engineering, will be imperative for my transition from high school into college.…
Classroom Communities On the surface classrooms are intended as learning environments, although they are way more than that, a school is also a community of students. Communities are important, because they could affect how students are learning. A particular community is defined by student’s interactions, interactions between staff and students, and the goal of the institution. The men of The Citadel, a military school in the south, and the social hierarchy that exists there are great examples of community in education.…
Learning center; Why is Community Engagement Important
Part A: The two aspects of the effective pedagogy statement from the New Zealand Curriculum (Ministry of Education, 2007) that I will focus on are creating a supportive learning environment and making connections to prior learning and experience. These are two aspects that resonate with me and I consider them to be significant factors in effective teaching practices. Creating a supportive learning environment is important for a teacher to consider because it sets the foundation of the classroom, both physically and emotionally, between all members of the classroom community. For a teacher to be effective positive relationships need to be developed, not just with the students, but also with the wider school community, such as parents so that…
Community Engagement When I was assigned the community engagement assignment I had no idea what I wanted to do for it. So I thought about what is something that I do not have a lot experience in so I can try to better myself as a person. Growing up I never really attended church. Attending church is something that I have been thinking about starting recently, I just have never got myself to go. I have wanted to learn more about religion and it is interesting to me.…
First, don’t get tripped up on the awkward wording of this question. Replace the word “enrich” with “contribute to.” Basically, they want to know how and what you will contribute to their college (which just happens to pride itself on being diverse and inclusive.) The main thing you are contributing is YOU! If you are unique and participate in unique activities, you will naturally contribute to their prized diverse community.

Statements - Stanford Graduate Admissions
I drum my fingers nervously against my leg as I feel my heart rate quicken. A swarm of butterflies in my stomach adds to my discomfort as I try to take deep breaths to calm myself down. My feeling of dread peaks as the nerve-wracking moment arrives: it’s my turn.
Despite what you may be thinking, it was not my turn to board a giant roller coaster or try my hand at cliff diving. It was simply my turn to introduce myself to my math class on my first day of freshman year. While it may seem absurd to get so worked up over merely introducing yourself to some classmates, that is what it is like to live with social anxiety. Social anxiety can turn even the smallest social interaction into a daunting affair that causes immense stress. As I have lived with social anxiety for most of my life, this is a feeling I know very well.
Recently, I have been fortunate enough to make a lot of progress in coping with and working through my anxiety by being involved with several organizations during high school and taking leadership roles in many of them to build my self-confidence.
Although I am not as affected by the symptoms of my anxiety currently, I still know what it is like to fear even the smallest of social events. This knowledge will help me contribute to making a learning community a safe, welcoming, and understanding environment for other students with social anxiety. I understand the importance of giving people time and space to become comfortable with their surroundings before approaching them. I know how meaningful having a one-on-one conversation with a more reserved person can be, and I know how much a simple compliment can put someone’s self-consciousness at ease.
By being a member of a learning community, I feel I would be able to help others who have social anxiety feel more comfortable, while also helping those who do not become more mindful and understanding of the symptoms of social anxiety. (340 words)

Enriching the Learning (Michael Roberts) Answering Question 4
In my opinion, these are activities which would benefit all children, especially those from impoverished homes who received little encouragement for learning, either in school or out, or opportunity for enrichment. My belief is that ‘enriched’ individuals enrich their communities and society as a whole. My suggestion of an if implemented, would help remedy the situation for some.
