I really wish somebody would have told me this about a year ago, when I was panicking about scholarships. I go to a school where college is not guaranteed, as many students there who choose to attend college will be a first generation college student. They try their best to help us with scholarship applications, but I'm not a typical student. I drive 35 minutes to go to school there because I'm in a special program they have at the school. It's a dual enrollment program with an accredited university that allows you to graduate high school with 60+ college credits (associate degree). This program is used to help bring the schools test scores up (to keep them funded), which is why the program has been placed in a lower income area. Therefore, many scholarships they offer do not apply to me, as I do not come from a lower income family.
They still earn money off of you. You might not have paid a dime, yet they're still earning money, and here's why. You give them your information, including an email and full name with the hopes you'll win a scholarship. They turn around and sell that information to their buddies i.e.: other scholarship websites, along with other sketchy sites. And in return, you never win scholarship money, getting a lifetime of spam emails instead. It's a never ending cycle. You can unsubscribe to one scholarship service and still have dozens of emails from six other services.
People need to talk about this. They need to stop naive children from sharing their information with a hope of winning an easy, no essay scholarship. Their chances of winning are so small, it's crazy. You're more likely to win a scholarship for smiling in a picture than by giving your information to these sites. And that's why I've said that you should not ever apply for no essay scholarships. Doing the work the right way is better than trying to take shortcuts. And the internet sucks. Don't make the same mistakes I did.

However, from the perspective of private organizations, many of them would rather save their scholarships of higher amounts to be distributed through competitive opportunities where they can select students on the basis of merit, leadership, and other qualities. That's why you'll probably never come across a full-ride scholarship that doesn't require an essay or extra submission of some sort!
Scholarships with no essays that have any sort of additional component (like an art or video submission) will tend to give you a "leg up" because they involve more than some luck.
When you apply for essay-based scholarships, you're given the opportunity to tell the committee about you, who you are and why you should be selected for the opportunity. The winners for these scholarships, unlike their no-essay counterparts, are not chosen at random, so if you choose these scholarships carefully, apply for ones that are specific to your qualities, and write strong essays, you'll have the best chances of winning at the end of the day!
