The NRA Civil Rights Defense Fund sponsors a scholarly writing contest for grades K-12. The theme for the essay is "What Does The Second Amendment Mean to You?" Essays will be judged in two categories: Senior (grades 9-12) and junior (grades 8 and below), with separate cash prizes awarded to the winners in each category. First place cash prizes are $1,000, $600 for second place, $200 for third

Writing contests are a great way to prove your creativity, as there are many different genres to explore, depending on your interests. Unlike standardized tests, like the SAT or ACT, writing contests and essay competitions aimed to explore creative argumentations.

This contest emphasizes growth but is open to personal essays mixed with other genres, including fiction. No violence. Contest notes that judges review a piece based on its creativity, new angles, upending stereotypes, unexpected delights and expansion of “our beliefs about what's possible.”

Fall 2024 Flash Fiction Contest Update 12/1/2024: The Fall Contest (Entry dates: September 1, 2024 - November 30, 2024) is now closed and in first round judging. The first round is the most intensive round of judging and lasts 1 month and 1 week. Judging is conducted by 12+ judges. We expect to have a list of finalists on January 7 - 8, 2025. We will post a list of finalists here as well as send finalists further information on their judging schedule. At that time, we will also send back critiques to writers who purchased one.
