Boyd is a social media scholar and a youth researcher who has spent almost a decade compiling data in order to grasp what social media is doing to the modern day teens. There are three overall main concepts the book focuses on: What is and isn’t new about life with social media, what does it add and take away from teens’ social life, and how can we take advantage while still limiting the potential abuse of social media. The purpose of this review is to give a well thought out summary of the three main points in the book while also giving arguments that show another side.
Purpose of Study Individuals should understand that the use or nonuse of social media has negative and positive effects on their lives, whether they recognize them or not. Students who excessively use social networking applications can be negatively affected because they are spending too much time on these applications rather than paying attention in class, completing homework, studying, sleeping, or focusing on their own health and condition. However, these same students who are excessive users are often times the students who are more aware of global issues and updates in pop culture through the use of social media. Students who moderately use social networking applications spend a good amount of time on these applications and are still able to manage time for sleeping, practicing good eating habits, homework, and studying. These students are usually just as aware, or slightly less aware, than students who excessively use social networking.
We cannot deny the evolution of technologies because due to its development a lot of things are changing day by day. Undoubtedly, social media has its advantages and its disadvantages. The idea of social networks should not be abandoned just because they sometimes have some negative effect on person’s conscience. The disadvantages could be eliminated by raising these issues publicly. The networks are continuously developing and trying to reduce adverse problems. There are still points that require being fixed, but the positive effects outweigh the negative ones.
