I'm decent enough at English to have made it this far, but I'm pretty sure I struggle more with writing essays than the average (third-year) English major. I'm good at catching meaningful details in texts and analyzing them, but I always struggle with the bigger-picture part (which, you know, comes into play when you gotta have a thesis!). Once I have an idea it's easy enough to write, but until then, I end up spending hours staring at pages of disparate ideas trying to put them together into something cohesive, and it's just painful. So all that to ask...I know there's no "right" way to approach anything, but what works for you? Do you come up with a thesis, outline, and then write, or do you just start writing and hope your epiphany hits by the end? How do you stop yourself from overthinking?

In longer essays, the same principle applies on a broader scale. For example, you might have two or three sections in your main body, each with multiple paragraphs. Within these sections, you still want to begin new paragraphs at logical moments—a turn in the argument or the introduction of a new idea.

As part my MFA program, I’ve had to write eight page papers on a paragraph or two of text. That’s a lot of words about not too many words. I’ve also watched my daughters draft critical analyses on literary works in both high school and college. Writing a literary essay is a lifelong skill that we are all working to master, so what can we expect our elementary writers to be able to do, and how can we provide instruction so they can succeed at a sophisticated task.
